M01 Restoration
At SRM we specialise in the renovation of these particular models of LUCAS magneto.
In the 1940s the LUCAS M01 (magdyno) unit was used extensively on a variety of British single cylinder engines from the WW2 BSA M20 through till the GOLDSTAR DBD34 and many other British Singles.
The unit is easily recognisable from the mounting of the LUCAS E3H or E3L on top of the magneto. The most common problem with original magnetos is failure once hot. This is usually due to a breakdown in the insulation of the condenser or of the armature windings themselves.
When we undertake the renovation of one of these units we concentrate on three main areas:
- The mechanical parts
- The electrical parts
- The electrical performance
For the mechanical renovation we are concerned with bearings, insulation washers and the correct assembly and shimming of the armature and assembly of the fibre gear ‘clutch’ and in the electrical renovation we look at the windings, condenser, slip ring and points arrangement. The magneto body is re-magnatised and the magnetos electrical performance can only then be examined when the magneto is actual ‘run’ as if it were on the engine.
We use the CRYPTON ELECTRICAL TEST BENCH to do a comprehensive testing programme on each magneto we rebuild. This allows us to do slight adjustments to the magneto to achieve the best constant and accurately timed spark that the magneto is able to produce.
The final running test programme includes:-
- Checking the normal spark HT Voltage
- Checking the maximum available spark HT Voltage
- Checking the ignition timing stability over rev range
- Running the magneto for 20 minutes whilst heating to full engine temperature
By performing this test programme we can be confident that the magneto you fit to your engine will be at peak performance and will remain reliable for years to come.
